Every year hundreds of thousands of vacationers from Canada, Europe, the States, and elsewhere travel to the small Latin America country of Costa Rica. It is a great destination for different reasons for different people. Some love the great beaches and warm, blue waters. Others prefer the lush tropical mountains and great weather. There are an extraordinary number of things to do and see during the days and, of course, many, many travel for its adult nightlife (what happens here, stays here) as well.

If you want to travel Costa Rica, you will not need to spend a arm and leg to experience it. Just bring a little flexibility.

Adventurers and explorers have marveled about this country for centuries. Christopher Columbus was the first to discover it, doing so in 1503. He was so enraptured he gave it its name, Costa Rica–the rich coast. About seven decades later, an English captain and seafarer named Sir Francis Drake rounded the southernmost point of South America and traveled north until he dropped anchor at what is now called Drake Bay off the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. You may have heard of this fellow: he is famous for destroying the Spanish Armada and saving England in 1588.

However, unlike these men, you won’t need a boatload of people to help you get around and it will not cost you the Crown treasure, either.

Want a boat ride? Think about a nice cruise along the tropical waters off the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. For about the price of a bottle of water or can of soda—and less than a beer—you can travel between Puntarenas and the southern tip of the lovely Nicoya Peninsula on a fun ferry. Can you spare about $1.50 for an hour and half long cruise? Is this value or what?

Trains are always fun, too. From the train terminal in San Jose, you can take a four hour ride on the Tico Train to Puntarenas. Over the river and through the woods you’ll go. . . to the beach. That’s right. You’ll pass spectacular mountains and cross deep chasms on tall bridges in an old train packed with happy Costa Rican families. Don’t forget your camera and bathing suit because the Puntarenas terminal is on the beach! Most tourists don’t know about the train which costs about $16 each way. You’ll need train reservations so call American Travel at telephone number 22-33-33-00 when you are ready to go.

With nearly 800 miles of sunny beaches to be discovered, you can surf, hike, swim (but be careful about rip tides at some places), and even fish in the ocean for free. Every Costa Rica beach is public and open to everybody. And you can get anywhere really cheaply. Simply take a bus. They are everywhere in Costa Rica. You can, for example, see the lovely Pacific town of Jaco by hopping a bus in San Jose for $5.00. Or, go almost anywhere else in the country for that matter. For the price of a Happy Meal, you can travel Costa Rica!

I have one more thing for you. Throughout Costa Rica you’ll find hostels. Some, of course, are pretty basic, but more and more them offer private rooms for just a little more per person than a dorm. Of course, you can pay $70+ per person a night in a fancy resort or hotel but you can find very nice rooms for a fraction of that. In Costa Rica hostels are not just for college kids. I know because I sometimes stay in them—in private, quiet rooms—for way less than hotels.
