Scotland offers the finest countryside in the UK making it a most amazing holiday destination. Most visitors opt for Edinburgh as their primary destination, whereas a smaller number choose something a little different. The article below looks at vacations in Scotland and a variety of things to do while in Scotland. The article also examines the Wickerman Festival.
With such an immensely diverse countryside the choice of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is tremendously popular, as are mountain biking vacations. The most common vacations are fishing or golf. With Scotland being the home of golf it should not surprise you that that you are hardly ever too far from a minimum of one first class golf course. With the Rivers Tweed, Tay and Spey you can almost be certain of an amazing day fishing. But what if you fancy something a little different?
Growing numbers of folk are making music festivals their yearly vacation. Although nearly all music festivals are incredibly large with a focus on making money, you can discover a small selection of family orientated music festival, for example Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.
The Wickerman Festival is an yearly music and arts festival takes place on farm land near Dundrennan in Dumfries and Galloway approximately 5 miles from Kirkcudbright, Scotland. The festival celebrates the cult film “The Wicker Man which features Sir Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Ingrid Pitt, Diane Cilento and Britt Ekland.
The first festival was held in July, 2002 and was put together by a local guy called Sid Ambrose. With little experience of putting together a very large event it is a surprise that it still exists, especially when you consider the present economic climate. The festival has changed each year and, like the movie, has a cult following.
The festival is hugely family friendly it features numerous activities for children including, numerous fairground rides, a mountain biking trek, face painting and workshops. This can be verified easily by searching Google, Yahoo and MSN for Wickerman 2009 photos or simply visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Near to the festival site is the small village of Kirkudbright which was where many of the movies locations can be found for example Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery (post office and sweetshop). You will discover that there are a large number of places worth visiting in the region and it is really worth taking a short break here so that you may visit all of the attractions. Popular destinations in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Scottish bed and breakfast is always superb quality and is also fairly priced and far less expensive than staying in a hotel.
