The beautiful Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania have for a long time been a popular resort spot and vacation destination for families looking for an affordable vacation close to home. And why not? The Poconos are easy to get to from most places in the northeastern United States. They are conveniently located just a few hours from both New York City and our nation’s capitol. This area offers amazing scenery, a variety of outdoor activities and plenty for young travelers to do.

The Poconos mountains offer activities that children of various ages will enjoy. There is skiing, camping, hiking, biking, rafting and canoeing. As a matter of fact, just about any outdoors activity is offered at the Poconos.

The region is also home to several family resorts that offer their own long list of kid friendly activities. These resorts offer sparkling clean pools, playgrounds and scheduled entertainment events for kids.

One of these resorts is the Great Wolf Lodge. This lodge has a ton of water based things for the kids. They have some fun things like water slides, the lazy river, a wave pool and even a roller coaster of water. Every grandparent knows that children love the water rides.

A favorite among the winter traveler is the Woodloch resort. This resort, which sits on 100 acres of forest covered land, features lakeside fun during the sunny months, including a busy splash park for younger visitors. In the winter months, the place features everything from snow tubing to ice skating to downhill skiing.

Adventurous travelers might look for other activities to do outside of the resort. Fortunately, the Poconos offers so many other things to do.

The Eckley Mining Village is one of the best and most popular places in the area. This living history museum shows you what life was like at the time when Pennsylvania residents relied on strip mining pits to fuel their economy. The mining village features plenty of hands on activities for patrons.

How much do you know about the Delaware Indians? A educational place to learn more would be the Pocono Indian Museum. This is the only museum in the northeastern Pennsylvania area dedicated to presenting the actual history of the Delaware Indian. The museum follows the history of the Delaware Indian people by showing displays of tools, ancient artifacts and even weapons.

The museum is very educational. However, some parts of it may be surprising. The Pocono Indian Museum does not forget to detail the violent interaction of the Delaware Indians with European settlers. In reality, it took around 100 years or so for the settlers to destroy almost all traces, even minor traces, of the Delaware Indians existence.

Frugal families wanting a relatively inexpensive getaway should think about visiting the Poconos mountains this summer. A trip here is always a rejuvenating experience. Vacationers can both learn about the history of the United States and take advantage of some of the most wonderful outdoor areas in the state. This region is a true gem of America.
