The Poconos mountain hotels in Pennsylvania have for a long time been a perfect destination for people looking for an affordable vacation. And why not? The mountains, located just a few hours from both New York and our nation’s capitol offer amazing scenery, a plethora of outdoor activities and plenty for young vacationers to do.
The small businesses throughout the Poconos area offer a number of activities that children of various ages will enjoy. You’ll find things like horseback riding, cross country skiing, rafting, swimming, biking, hiking and camping. Come to think of it, just about any outdoors activity is offered somewhere at the Poconos mountains.
The region is also home to several family resorts that offer their own long list of child friendly activities. These resorts offer sparkling clean pools, playgrounds and scheduled entertainment events for children.
One gem of these resorts is the Great Wolf Lodge. This place has a ton of water based fun for the children. They have plenty of fun things like water slides, the lazy river, a wave pool and even a roller coaster of water. Every dad sooner or later learns that children love the water parks.
One favorite among the winter vacationer is the Woodloch resort. This resort, which sits on 100 acres of forest land, features lakeside fun in the sunny months, including a popular splash park for younger people. In the cold months, the resort features everything from snow tubing to ice skating to downhill skiing.
Adventurous people may look for other activities to do outside of the resort. Luckily, the Poconos offers numerous other things to do.
If you are into visiting local history, the Eckley Mining Village is one of the best and more popular attractions in the area. This living history museum gives you a sense of what life was like at the time when Pennsylvania residents relied on the strip mining pits to fuel their local economy. The mining village features plenty of hands on things to do for patrons.
Is anyone in your family of American Indian descent? A wonderful place to learn more about native Americans would be the Pocono Indian Museum. This is the only museum in the entire northeastern Pennsylvania area existing to present the history of the Delaware Indian. The museum looks back at the history of the Delaware Indian people by showing displays of ancient weapons, artifacts and tools.
Although it is very educational, some aspects of the museum can be shocking. The Pocono Indian Museum does not neglect to detail the less than friendly interaction of the Delaware Indians with European settlers. In reality, it took just 100 years or thereabouts for the new settlers to remove almost all traces of the Delaware Indians existence.
Frugal families searching for a relatively cheap little trip should not forget about the Poconos Mountains this summer. A trip here is always a rewarding experience. Vacationers can both learn about the history of the Pennsylvania area and take advantage of some of the most scenic outdoor settings in the state all in the same place. What more can a tourist ask for?
