Venice, Italy has its main terminal at the Marco Polo International Airport. A secondary airport, the Venice Treviso Airport, is used by budget airlines and charter carriers. The two airports both offer flights to all major cities in the United Kingdom, giving travelers many options when planning a trip.

Venice is located in northeastern Italy and is famous for its canals and gondolas. Another famous landmark in the city surrounded by water is the Bridge of Sighs. According to legend, the bridge grants eternal love to any couple that kisses beneath its arches as the sun goes down.

When you plan your vacation in Venice, it is very important to be aware that untreated sewage released directly into the canals leaves Venice with an intense, unpleasant odor during the height of summer. Spring and fall are milder, less odiferous, and far more pleasant.

Venice is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old center of the city, the canals function as roads, and all travel is done either via water or on foot. A rail station was built in Venice in the 19th century, and an auto causeway and parking lot were added in the 20th century. These are located on the land on the northern edges of the city. Venice is Europe’s largest urban car free area, adding to the city?s unique charm. Water travel can be conducted by gondola, although mostly tourists use these as they can be expensive, or the more economical water bus (taxi).

St. Mark’s Square is a must-see destination for every visitor to Venice. Among the treasures of St. Mark’s Square are the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Legend tells that Casanova burrowed a tunnel from the Doge’s Palace to freedom. Venice is also boasts a magnificent collection of Renaissance artworks, with the Titian and Tintoretto frescoes in the Doge’s Palace and other treasures in the Santa Maria dei Frari Church.

The Carnival of Venice, an annual festival, has been celebrated since 1268. Beginning two weeks before Ash Wednesday, it ends on Fat Tuesday. The carnival was banned by Mussolini and only revived in the 1980′s. Masks are a big part of Carnival. The masks may cover the entire face or just the eyes.

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world and one of its most prestigious. Founded in 1932, the festival takes place in late August or early September in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi.

The cuisine of Venice is simple and known for its use of flavorful, local ingredients, such as olive oil, vegetables, fruits, wine and cheese. Cured meats like salami and prosciutto are also popular.
