The Fourth Plinth is located in Trafalgar Square, London and is traditionally used to display statues. This year it is being transformed into a space for living art as Antony Gormley shows off his ground-breaking “One and Other” project (until October 14th 2009).
The artist is inviting anyone living in the UK to come and stand on the “plinth” for one hour each, to be seen by the whole world on a live webcam and television.
Thousands have applied for 2,400 spaces – chosen by luck. There is someone standing on the plinth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
Each individual is free to do as they please on the plinth, providing it’s legal. A lot of participants are taking the opportunity to show the world everything they’ve got!
The way the artist himself describes the idea is presented on the London Hotels Insight blog, which also carries a link to the project’s official website with its live webcam.
The project breaks new ground and gives visitors to London an amazing spectacle. It will provide a flavour of the diverse talents of people living in the UK and provide great entertainment. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting London!
To allow you to stay as near to the event on Trafalgar Square as possible, here are a couple of suggested hotels that rate highly on TripAdvisor. They cover all possible budgets:
A 5 star hotel with great reviews
If you come to London with someone you wish to impress, you would be wise to consider One Aldwych. This is a hotel with amazing contemporary design (later copied by many others) but which also thrives on friendly and down-to-earth service.
As soon as you step into the hotel’s beautiful lobby, you’ll receive a warm welcome from the staff.
When I personally interviewed the hotel’s founder, Mr Campbell Gray, he told me that he wanted every guest to have a stay which was “as exquisite as possible”.
You can find out more on One Aldwych through the link below, where you will also be able to get the best hotel deal from more than 30 different websites.
A highly-rated value hotel
If you’re on budget but still want to stay in this amazing area in the heart of Theatreland, you might want to consider the Travelodge in Covent Garden. It is only 10 minutes walk to Trafalgar Square.
You’ll be especially pleased with yourself for bagging a clean room where everything works in a superb location, paying less than what most others are paying to stay in this area!
Recent TripAdvisor guest reviews suggest that people love Travelodge Covent Garden’s location and value for money.
The location of either of the above hotels is handy for checking out the Tate Modern gallery or to take a ride on the London Eye.
A further advantage of staying in this area is the fact that you’ll be so close to all the wonderful street markets and performers of Covent Garden.
So if you are visiting London this summer or autumn, please don’t miss the folks on the plinth!
