November 13, 2009 by Zane Archer · Leave a Comment

The Sunshine Coast of Australia is one of the greatest places for you to visit. The weather is beautiful, almost year round, and because of this many of the beaches also stay open all year. While visiting the Sunshine Coast you are sure to have a lot of beach time fun, just be sure to follow the rules that are put in place for your safety. Here are some of the rules that should always be followed in order to have a safe and fun Australian vacation.

1. Swimming and surfing is prohibited at any beach where there are no lifesavers on duty.

2. While swimming or surfing, you are not permitted to swim outside of the red and yellow flags. These flags are there to make out the safe swim zone and should not be passed or ignored.

3. Do not swim immediately after eating or when you are intoxicated. You should wait at least an hour after eating or drinking before swimming.

4. There is no swimming or surfing on closed beaches.

5. Flags are placed in the water to mark off the safe swimming and surfing areas. If you are on a beach that does not have any flags then you should not enter into the waters.

6. Don’t panic if you are pulled down by the undertow; just raise one arm up and float.

7. Know the meaning of flag colors: Green = safe to swim, Yellow=dangerous conditions (swim with caution), Red=water is unsafe and you are not permitted to enter.

8. If you are swimming and get a cramp keep your cramped area still and raise your arm into the air. Your air will signal to the lifeguard that you need assistance and they will quickly swim out to assist you.

9. If a yellow flag is flying then you should not go out to far as this means the surf may be dangerous.

10. If you don’t understand the flags or are unsure it if it is safe to swim, ask a lifeguard, they will be happy to direct you.

By following these tips and rules you are sure to make the most out of your AUstralian vacation, while satying safe at the same time.
