Alaska Fiber Craft show

May 13, 2009 by Sive Iver · Leave a Comment

Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire after Western Union discontinued construction of its first electric telegraph line which ran from California, up the coast of North America, across the Bering Strait, continuing to Moscow and into the European telegraph network. This happened 50 years ago, now Alaska is celebrating its 50 Anniversary of Statehood with an Alaska Fiber Festival

To celebrate Alaskas 50th Statehood Anniversary there will be a Fiber Festival. This fiber extravaganza will be a 9 day event starting from March 5 to 14. On March 5 the festival will start of with a quilt walk at the downtown area.

Alaska Fiber Festival has an objective to provide greater visibility for quilts and other fiber art by offering various textile art events like non-juried & juried competitions as well as exhibitions. Educate the general public about fiber art & quilting as an art form & show the individual creativity of people in Alaska. Provide learning resources for people to learn new techniques or refine existing talents.

The festival will have textile artists, amazing International Fiber & Mixed Medias Exhibitors, exclusive Alaskan Challenges and Exhibits. The Festival will also include a Wearable Arts Fashion Show then a Quilt & Fiber Art Show. Quilters and textiles are invited to celebrate with us by making quilt art blocks that expressed the Alaska people, spirit and nature.

There will be 58 blocks a total of 140 quilters in 26 communities which in turn the blocks will be assembled into the nine art panels of the Alaska Statehood Quilt. The Alaska Statehood Quilt will reflect all the Alaska people spirit and nature that related to the Statehood.

There will be a tour after the panel has been made. This is where the panels will be shown to museums, libraries, and arts councils throughout Alaska. Anyone who has questions or wants to book the quilts needs to contact: Morgan Grey, Project Coordinator wilderhaven@gmail.com.

Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana ole Commemorative Parade

May 12, 2009 by Sive Iver · Leave a Comment

One of the most important members of Hawaiian nobility was Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole. Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole was born on March 26, 1871 and died on January 1, 1922. He was the prince at the time Hawaii was overthrown by American residents on 1893.

After he was thrown into prison around 1895 for his participation of rebellion against the Republic of Hawaii, he and his wife traveled around Europe and Africa. He was treated as a visiting royal on these travels. After a few years he returned from his self-imposed exile.

When he returned he joined the Democratic Party but after a few years he switched parties to the Republican. When Prince Khi joined the Republican he was disillusioned with the lack of aggressiveness the Democratic Party had about the fight for Hawaiian Independence. Here he was given a strong leadership position, which was a position that gave him an entry point to join the U.S. Congress.

The greatest and noble contribution that Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole gave was when he was still with the U.S. Congress. This is when he created the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which was signed by President Warren Harding.

Every year around March the Hawaiian Civic Clubs celebrates their founder of the Hawaiian Civic Club Movement. They celebrated Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole who was considered as the the Citizen Prince For this year the celebration will be held from March 8 to April4, 2009.

On March 8 at 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M the celebration will start with the Native Hawaiian Health Festival / Ho`ike`ike at the Bishop Museum. The admission fee is free for the public. There are health booths, craft vendors and other activities offered.

There will be different activities scheduled from March 8 to April 4. On April 4 the last activity would be the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu Holok Ball at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Monarch Room from 5:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. This ball will also have a free admission.
