The first sign of life around Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, are said to be some 40,000 years back, when local tribes first roamed its river banks. These days, Perth remains an attractive option, for its vibrant city center and proximity to the best that nature has to offer.
Founded in’29 by Captain James Stirling, Perth has been a great city for its residents ever since, situated on the Swan River about twenty kilometers from the Indian Ocean. Today it is home to a population topping 1.6 million people.
For a superior view of the city, hop on a scenic cruise down the Swan River., the city’s lifeline. Many boats offer dining and entertainment packages in the evening.
After getting a look at this city’s architecture and river banks, head downtown and take advantage of Perth’s shopping. Check out the souvenir stores for great mementos of your trip, or browse through the Aboriginal arts and crafts. Perth’s bustling metropolis will deliver on high fashion and designer stores, but you will also find the materials to go exploring throughout Western Australia. Stock up on beach items like swimwear and surfboards, or get ready to go camping by buying your tent and thermoses here.
A short drive to Kings Park will bring you high up on Mt. Eliza, where you can join the native birds for an eagle-eye view of downtown Perth. Australia’s bushland plant life is on display and the Botanic Gardens is mandatory on a summer’s day when picnic weather is just right. In the warmer months, stop by an outdoor concert or see a movie by starlight.
A few minutes from the city center lies the Perth Zoo. Watch Australia’s natural wonders roam from a safe point of view. Kangaroos, dingoes and even the wallaby are all present.
For a look at historic Perth, visit the Old Mill which dates back to’35. The setting of the Old Mill has a distinctly colonial feel, offering a glimpse of Perth before its commercial supremacy. Learn about threats to the local population by Aborigine attacks and find out how this landmark survived its near demolition in the middle of the 20th century.
Back in the urban landscape, visit St. George Terrace and experience London Court, a Tudor-style taste of Old England. Follow the pedestrian thoroughfares past sidewalk cafes and antique merchants’ shops and take a picture of St. George’s great clock.
One of Perth’s great features is its proximity to natural wonders. The Sunset Coast is home to the area’s best beaches, from the Mindarie Keys to Cottlesloe on the western edge of the city. Swanbourne and Scarborough are two more exotic destinations where the worries of the city life will soon disappear.
While in Perth, you’ll find a number of five-star hotels which will suit the most discriminating traveler. There are also a number of mid-range hotel options.
The fine dining is unparalleled in Western Australia and you will have your choice of award-winning restaurants on a nightly basis.
