The US is comprised of slightly more than 300 million people out of nearly 7 billion in the world. That is about 5% of the world population. The USA will likely lose some of its world dominance if it gets complacent and resists global trends in modern day sports.
Vast amounts of money are already being put into countries across the globe. Looking ahead, the USA may lose its grip as the most powerful sports media force in the world, all lost at the expense of other emerging nations.
This very bluntly means that in order to stand out… athletes, media personalities, owners, coaches and agents will have to become global. In order for the US to maintain its #1 position in sports it has to become multilingual, multicultural and expansive in its knowledge.
The US should build this strategy from the ground up, teaching its students emerging languages like Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Indian. If this doesn’t take place, the admiration that so many international sports fans cast on American athletes will soon be replaced with attention toward athletes in emerging markets and other nations.
The rest of the world is quickly catching up to us in sports viewership, and we must address this. Soccer is a perfect instance of this. We, as Americans, are still stubborn about our willingness to accept soccer as a mainstream international sport, when the rest of the world casts it as its favorite sport. I have personally tried to counter this by accepting the sport, and I’ve learned to love it.
Not only is soccer an incredible sport, but the picture is beautiful when watched on HDTV. The game’s premier player (Cristiano Ronaldo) just as exciting with his ball-handling skills as Chris Paul is when it comes to NBA basketball. Kaka and his excellent means of passing the ball to his teammates is just as exciting as watching Drew Brees passing the ball to his fellow Saints.
Open your eyes, ears, hearts and minds to the globe! Americans are bold, daring and risk taking people and we are even more so as sports fans. The risk is that we fail to open our arms to the world and we’ll therefore flirt with irrelevancy.
The reward is that if we embrace the dynamic world around us, we then continue to maintain and preserve American dominance for as long as the eye can see. And very few would object to this.
